Moderator: ‘School na scam!’ This quote is one that is commonly found across the
different social media pages of many young Nigerians. Reasons abound for why this
quote has become the mantra for a large majority of this demographic. Let’s settle
this with a debate!
Arumeme:
Good day the chairman,
The accurate timekeeper,
Impartial panel of judges,
My codebators,
The amazing audience.
My name is Arumeme and I am a social media manager. I am here to support the
motion, ‘School na scam!’ with my full chest. My reasons are:
- A piece of paper should not define my intelligence and ability to solve
problems in the real world. Schools make me take tests and exams, grade me
based on these tests and exams, and label me as either a success or failure
based on the outcomes of the assessments. How cruel! The myriad of
abilities that I possess, the wealth of life experiences that I have gathered,
all my wins and failures; thrown out the window, in favour of my scores in a
test or exam. Abeg, school na scam! - Schools make me learn defunct ideas; they expose me to information that I
have no need for. Why did I have to learn about the life cycle of an
earthworm? Do they not know that I have a fear of crawling objects? What
about the language of love? Why was I never taught forgiveness, fortitude,
confidence, money management, and other social skills? Why was I never
tested based on my ability to solve real life problems? I mean, there was
that one time that I managed to dodge chores in school for a whole week! Do
am if e easy! Does my ability to navigate through difficult life experiences
mean nothing to you? Guy, you no fit tell me anything jare, school na scam! - Schools did not help me discover my passion. In fact, schools can not help
anyone discover their passion. As a human, I am a complex being; my
interests are subject to change. In school, I was forced to spend 5 years
studying the same course, and when I lost interest, I failed. No nah! Why
can’t I be encouraged to explore all the different talents that I possess?
See, school was designed to hold us back! Stay away from school; you will be
better off focusing on yourself. Shey you no say I no fit lie give you, school
na scam!
Thank you!
